Congrats Owen Callahan - New World Record Holder for The Crew!
Not many coaches can say they’ve worked with an all-time world record holder. I’ve been lucky enough to have had a hand in coaching a few, but this one was special.
Owen reached out to me last year to help him prep for his first geared meet, this very same meet. We did a lot of technical work leading into it, but unfortunately, he strained his quad during warmups and was forced to compete bench only.
Over the past year, we made a conscious effort to get stronger raw before incorporating gear again. This prep, we transitioned very gradually from raw to full gear and were able to get his technique dialed in better than I’ve ever seen. We hit a couple small roadblocks along the way, but overall, this prep went about as perfectly as we could’ve asked for.
His performance on meet day was nothing short of spectacular. Despite the energy of the crowd, Owen stayed calm, poised, and executed exactly how he knew he could. Even at just 19 years old, he performed like a veteran and it showed.
Owen walked away with the all-time teen multiply 198lb world record squat of 816lbs, a #6 all-time unlimited bench at 570lbs, and a #11 all-time total of 1900lbs. To put it in perspective, that squat alone would rank #14 all-time in the junior class (20–23) and top 80 all-time in the open.
It’s an honor to coach an athlete of this caliber and to watch his development not just physically, but mentally. His work ethic, humble attitude, and trust in the process are what made this world record possible. He’s an athlete you can’t help but root for.
Huge congrats, Owen. Not many lifters will ever know the feeling of breaking an all-time world record. We talked about this after this meet with Mark VanAlstyne who helped us out a lot on meet day and is also a geared world record holder, how important it is to pause and enjoy these moments. Powerlifting is a long journey, and being able to appreciate the milestones along the way is what it’s all about.
This one is giant and so well deserved. Here’s to Owen Callahan, a world record holder from The Crew! 👏
If you’ve been thinking about taking your own training seriously or just want some guidance on how to improve technique, strategy, or consistency, I’m always happy to work with motivated lifters. No pressure, just a chance to help you get stronger, smarter, and more confident in the gym.
