Reflections on the Chase - From a 2000lb Total to Building Something Greater

One of the things I talked about on the most recent Powerlifter’s Den Podcast that I was a guest on was how much easier it was to stay locked in on my goals back when I was chasing my 2000lb total.

At that time, Legends didn’t exist. I wasn’t coaching any athletes. I had just moved into my first townhouse, working one full-time job with one goal in mind and that was to become the best powerlifter Rochester has seen and do my part to grow the sport in this city.

That was my entire focus and life was simple. Everything I did revolved around training, recovery, and progress. There were no distractions, no competing responsibilities, just pure obsession with getting stronger.

Fast forward to now, and the picture looks very different. Between opening Legends, building The Crew, coaching hundreds of athletes, and working full time 12 hour shifts at Ginna, I’ve realized how much more I’m balancing.

For a long time, I didn’t give myself grace for that. I just assumed I could keep chasing competition the same way I always had and that no matter how much my life evolved, I could still give 100% to being an athlete but the truth is, competing will never be my #1 priority again and that’s okay.

Next year, I’ll be stepping on the bodybuilding stage again for the first time since 2012, after a 20+ meet powerlifting career and battling through multiple surgeries and injuries. That moment will be a tremendous victory for me. Not because of what’s on the score sheet, but because of what it represents to me which is resilience, growth, and the ability to evolve without losing sight of what drives you.

No matter what happens on that stage, my greatest source of pride will always be what we’ve built here, Legends, The Crew, and the athletes I get to coach every single day. Those are my real responsibilities now.

Looking back, I realize how simple life was when all I had to think about was training and I’m grateful I cherished that time because that chapter shaped everything that came next.

Every rep, every setback, and every win led me here and I wouldn’t trade that for the world.
