Why Having the Right Coach Matters
Let’s be honest, the barrier to entry in online coaching is zero.
You don’t need a certification, any real experience, or even time under a barbell to call yourself a “coach” these days. Anyone with a social media account can start selling programs overnight and that’s exactly why so many lifters end up frustrated, spinning their wheels, or even injured due to following plans made by people who don’t truly understand what they’re doing.
The truth is, there’s a massive difference between someone who just writes workouts and someone who coaches. Experience isn’t just a nice bonus, it’s everything. It’s the difference between trial and error, and true progress. A coach who’s been under the bar, who’s failed, learned, and built real results over time understands the process on a deeper level because they’ve lived it.
I’ve coached hundreds of athletes, from beginners who just wanted to get stronger, to all-time world record holders competing at the top of the sport. I’ve competed at the highest levels myself and hold an accredited coaching certification from Coaches Corner University, which emphasizes both the science and art of coaching. That combination of education and experience means I can help lifters make progress efficiently, safely, and with intention, not by guessing.
When you’re looking for a coach, don’t just look at who has the most followers or the flashiest videos. Ask the real questions:
Have they actually competed? Have they worked with a wide range of athletes, not just one success story? Can they explain why they do what they do? Do they communicate consistently, make adjustments when needed, and actually check in on your progress? If the answer is no, you’re not hiring a coach, you’re buying a template.
A real coach provides more than just a program. They provide structure, accountability, and communication. They give you a clear plan, keep you focused when motivation fades, and make the right calls when progress stalls. They reinforce your effort with direction and feedback that keeps you growing. That’s how you get results, by working with someone who knows how to take your work ethic and channel it the right way.
That’s exactly why I built my Crew Coaching app, to give every athlete the same level of structure and support I’d want as a lifter myself. Every video review, weekly check-in, program update, and metric runs through one system. There’s a message board where the whole Crew interacts, shares progress, and supports each other. It’s organized, intentional, and built to keep communication and accountability at the core of the process because the truth is, no one gets strong alone, it takes structure, guidance, and community.
An experienced coach brings something else you can’t fake… pattern recognition. After working with hundreds of lifters, you start to see movement patterns, mindset tendencies, and sticking points instantly. You can tell when someone needs a technical cue, a programming tweak, or just a reminder to trust the process. That kind of awareness can save months of wasted time and keep progress moving when others would stall out. That’s the real value of experience, it doesn’t just make training smarter, it makes it personal.
At the end of the day, it’s still up to you to do the work. No coach can lift the weights for you, but the right coach will make sure your effort actually leads somewhere. They’ll give you the structure, the accountability, and the belief that you can become something greater. They’ll build you from the ground up.
Real coaching isn’t about selling programs, it’s about building people.
